The heaviest thunderstorm experienced in Sydney for many years burst over a. portion of the metropolitan area last night, and torrential rain fell, with terrific thunder and vivid lightning. Traffic in the city and suburbs was disorganised during the busy hour, when everyone was rushing to get home after work.; In places the electric light failed: : The drain pipes were not sufficient to take the water away, and flooding occured at many points. At Circular quay some parts were two feet under water. There were several minor casualtiei through people falling over the submerged kerbs. .'. , „. ':.,'.. ,'.. '

At Neutral Bay a woman was swept ott her feet and carried into a' stormwater drain, and a man who attempted to rescue her was nearly drowned, and is in hospital in a serious condition. In North Sydney the streets were feet deep under water. At one place a flra engine was employed to pump the water away. The cellars of many shops in the city suffered considerably. ' There is scarcely a tramline on which a tram was not derailed, owing to silt blocking the rails. A cloudburst occurred at Newport, and did immense damage.
