C. M^tirea having to withdraw, Ihe club has just commenced its jubilee year, and members are naturally hoping to make a good showing in tho annual 20-aside match ■ against Auckland, which is scheduled to commence at 6 p.m. on Saturday next. The Northern club will, however, be able to select a very strong side, having elected 37 new members during the year just ended. The Auckland Chess Club's membership stood at 92 when the forty-first annual meeting was held recently. This is believed to be a New Zealand record, and it is probable that the three-figure mark has been reached by this time. Meanwhile the Wellington Chess Club, which owes much to its patron (Sir Harold Beauchamp, X.8.) and to its president (Mr. W. Mackay), continues to hoe a hard row with about SO members. But the local enthusiasts are not downhearted.
