ON HEAVY GROUNDS
SATURDAY'S HOCKEY
SEVERAL GAMES POSTPONED
KARORI OUTCLASS 'VARSITY.
Rain-soaked grounds mads matters somewhat unpleasant for players in the fourth series of hockey competition matches played on Saturday afternoon. The turf at the majority of the playing areas was very soft, and in view of this fact all ladies' games were postponed. X was also considered inadvisable to play the matches set down for the Hutt Recreation Ground, which meant that several men's matches, including the senior A Hutt v. Wesley fixture, had to be deferred. Ten games, exclusive of primary school boy matches, took place at Karori Park, and the standard of hockey there, considering the unfavourable conditions, was, on the whole, good. Karori and 'Varsity on No. 8 ground provided the senior A game, which resulted in. a comfortable win for the former team by 4 goals to 1. Although, outclassed 'Varsity put up a good fight and were keen to tho end. The Karori men, without one exception, played well, and their combination and stick work at times was a treat lo watch. The only other senior A game played, that between Wakatu and Wellington, was- fought out at Newtown Park. Both teams gave a fairly good display, and tho score, 2 goals to nil in favour of Wakatu was, on the day, a fair indication of the respective merits of the two elevens. In the senior B grade matches were keenly contcrfled, and were of an^ interesting nature. The meeting of Hutt and V.M.- ---' C.A. on No. 1 ground at Karori Park I attracted most attention. Hutt were decidedly off colour, and V.M.C.A. ran up a score of 5 goals to 2 against * them. Olther teams to secure wins in ; the senior B grade were Karori, Wesley, ! and Huia.
