A TEMPORARY IMPROVEMENT,
The report from the Meteorological Office to-day was that heavy rain and floods had been experienced in many parts of the North Island, more particularly in the Auckland, Taranaki, and central districts. Generally, the weather had been unsettled and wet. The worst effects of the disturbance, however, had passed with the disappearance eastward of the primary depression. Although the barometer had risen everywhere, it was still below normal, and the indications were for cold unsettled weather, with rain in many parts. Moderate to strong west to south-west winds are likely northward of New Plymouth and Napier, and strong southerlies elsewhere, squally at times about Cook Strait. It is probable that there will be a temporary improvement tomorrow, followed by more unsettled weather early in the week. Local rainfall up to 9 o'clock this morning amounted to 0.47 inches, and other falls reported are:—Wanganui, 1.14 inches; Foxton, 1.42 inches; and Kouhukura, 6.46 inches. "
