NE_W, COMMITTEE PROEOSED
"CLEARING HOUSE FOR NEW KNOWLEDGE,"
(TOITID PRE6S ASSOCIATION—COFIRMHT.)
(AUSTRALIAN-NEW ZEALAND CABLE ASSOCIATION.) LONDON, 20th May.: In the House of Lords the Earl of Balfour announced that the Government proposed to set up a committee analogous to the Committee of Imperial Defence, which would deal with the great problem of Empire development. The statement followed a debate regarding Kenya land labour. The Duke and Duchess of York, who recently returned from East Africa, were interested spectators.
The Earl of Balfour declared that machinery was needed to enable the problems of East Africa, and other parts of the Empire to be considered in their entirety.. The duty of the'proposed committee would be, to advise Cabinet. It would have no executive action. There were tremendous problems of Empire awaiting solution in a 'wider spirit and with a greater command of scientific .method than at present was at our disposal. One immense advantage would be to prevent the isolation of our dependencies one from another. He was confident the committee would be of immense service as a clearing house for new knowledge.
