The Government prohibition authorities claim that the campaign against the liquor-runners is so effective that a severe blow has been dealt to the trade. The blockading coastguard forces have reported that the liquor fleets oil tho Atlantic coast have been widely scattered, and are unable to arrange smuggling contracts. Operators of tho bootleg ring ridicule this, however, and claim that goods are being auded nightly, in spite of the blockade. _ Some support is given to their chums, as prizes have been reducing in certain instances in a, spirit of bravado. They claim that the Government is unable to stop liquor enteritis New York and other coast cities, but admit that the effect of the campaign is likely _ to bo to cut off supplies to the interior m the meantime. It is reported that many of the liquor ships have taken refuge m Halifax, to kill time, in the belief that the campaign is only a temporary one, and will be relaxed Reports from Halifux state that thirteen liquor ships have been docked Some are discharging their cargoes, and will re-enter the freight business. Others are sailing with liquor still in their holds.
