INTOXICATED DRIVER

SENTENCED TO A WEEK'S IM-

PRISONMENT

(BI TELEGRAPH.—PKKSS ASSOCIATION.)

AUCKLAND, 20th May. A well-known bus proprietor of Auckland, J. Trewheela, appeared ou summons at the Police Court this morning, when he was charged with being in charge of a motor-bus on Grafton Bridge while in a state of intoxication. Mx\ J. J. Sullivan, who appeared for Trewheela, in pleading guilty, said that no damage was done, either to the bus or to pedestrians. Defendant was a wellknown man, who owned three large sight-seeing buses. Mr; Sullivan said that recently it had been the practice of the Court to inflict fines on motorists who were charged with being in a state of intoxication, and Trewheela was not very intoxicated, and was not airested by the police. In view of the facts of the case, and the recent practice of the Court in such cases, counsel pleaded Jhat if defendant was sent to prison it would practically ruin his business. Would the Magistrate inflict a fine in this case?

Mr. Poynton: "I have given warnings times out of number that the penalties in such cases would have to be increased. A motor-bus is far more dangerous than an ordinary.motor-car, as it carries more passengers, and, in this case I cannot impose a fine. Defendant will be sentenced to seven days', imprisonment."
