It was agreed that the hospital rate be 3-10 d, compared with 5-22 d; and that the special rate for bridges, etc., loan l-10d, the same as last year. Speaking of the meeting recently held at Brightwater in connection with the closing of the Wairoa Bridge, the chairman (Councillor Best) said that the committee of ratepayers had put on a man to limit the traffic to one vehicle at a time. It was a matter for the council to say whether the man's wages would be paid by the council. It had been anticipated that a proposal to .repair the bridge would be received from Mr. Robertson, but no communication had been received. Councillor Corder agreed with the action taken by the council at the meeting, but considered that anything further should be discussed at next meeting of the council. Councillor Macmahon said councillors had agreed to close the bridge technically, but not to barricade it until after the present meeting. The council decided to hold over further consideration till nest meeting.
