MODIFIED PROPOSALS FOR HUTT

ROAD CROSSING.

At last night's--meeting of the Petone Borough Council a, letter was received from tho Chief Engineer of .the- Railway Department (Mr.' F. C. "Wid'lop) forwarding a plan showing Hie proposed deviation of the main Hult road over the railway'in the vicinity of Wakefield street. The letter reads: ""The proposals provide for a roadway 33ft wide and f>ifcpaths on each side of a width of sft. The grade of the road approaches to tho overbridge, which will eventually be paved with bitumen, will bo 1 in 22. The new line will grade down from the existing line at a grade of 1 in 100, and will cross the existing main road 6ft below the surfaoe, thus reducing the height of the embankment by a corres-^ ponding amount. A piece of level road not less than 30ft wide will be left in front of the properties on the south side of the main road, the footpath in this locality to be reduced in width. The run, out of the' graded road will fit in with the levels of the existing roadway at Nelson and Wakefield streets. Levels showing the relative heights of the existing and proposed road are shown on plan. I will be glad if you will placo theso proposals before the council for early consideration, and advise if they meet with approval." Councillor Sharpe asked if it would not be wise to get the opinion of the borough solicitor as to the council's power 3in the matter, and on his motion it was decided to defer consideration of the question until next meeting. Tho Mayor, as a member of the Hutt Valley Eailway Board, was asked to report to the next meeting of the council on the proposals of the Railway Department in regard to the crossing of Cuba street and the proposed closing of Plunket avenue and Ava street, also the question of foot traffic over the proposed railway bridge over the Hutt River.
