TRAGIC DEATH

IN VERY DISTRESSING CIRCUMSTANCES

CHILDREN'S TRYING TIME,

(IROII OUR OTTS CORRESPONDENT.)

■ NELSON, 18th May. 'Mr. Edgar. Neve, a. highly respected resident of Tahunanui, died yesterday morning in very distressing circumstances. Mr. Neve had set out with two of his children for a tramp up Ennev Glen to Jenkin's Hill, intending to return home via Poor Man's Valley. When the top of Jenkin's Hill was reached and the bush' entered, Mr. Neve was taken with heart seizure, which resulted in his death; " • ■•;".■ ■

Thinking her father had fainted, one of the children, a daughter, remained with •him, while her. brother went for assistance. As. help was not soon in arriving, the daughter, thinking her brother had gone astray, decided to seek assistance, eventually reaching Mrs. Barr's home in Poor Man's Valley. Mrs. Barr immediately set out and climbed the hill with the children. They could ■not find the place where Mr. Neve was lying, and had to return to summon further assistance. Messrs. C. T. Price, J. Brown, and H. Mills set out for the hills. Dr. Barr and two sons of Captain Hay—G. and R. Hay—Mrs. Barr, and the two children also searched. At dusk, Mr. J." Brown found the body in the hush near the top of Jenkin's Hill in a most inaccessible place, and had it not been that a white hat was nearby it is not likely it would have been found that night. Owing to the rough country, great difficulty was experienced in getting the body out. Others having heard of the occurrence and arriving on the scene, this was eventually accomplished. Much sympathy is felt for the widow and five children who are left. As a medical certificate of death has heen given, an inquest will not be necessary.
