THE POLAR FLIGHT

AMUNDSEN STILL WAITING

•COLD WEATHER, DIFFICULTIES.

(UNITED PRESS ASSOCIATION—COPYRIGHT.)

(SIDNEY SUN CAKLE.)

LONDON, 17th May. A wireless message from Spitzbergen, dated 16th May, says :—"The weather last week made the polar flight impossible. The ice conditions ate still bad. During the waiting period the motors are started daily to keep them in perfect running condition. The difficulties of starting in'a low temperature have been overcome, and experiments to find tho right, admixture of cooling water succeeded in eliminating the risk of tho water freezing. The difficulty of the oil .^becoming thick and heavy als*i> has been overcome "

Captain Amundsen, however, persists in waiting for milder weather for starting, as he thinks it would not be wise to risk the motors, freezing, although the risk has been reduced to a minimum. Everything^ else in connection with the expedition is ready.
