ADVICE TO VACCINATE

NEW YORK, 18th May.

A mild outbreak of smallpox is prevalent throughout a large part of the United States. Thirty-four States report more than the usual number of cases.

Public Health officials, while careful to urge that there is no cause for alarm, are nevertheless doing everything possible to mako vaccination general. President Coolidge set the example in Washington, following which practically all the Cabinet members, Administration officials, and their staffs were also vaccinated. Mr. Hylan, Mayor of New York, followed suit at the request of the Health Commissioner, who recommended that all members of the public should do likewise.

New York has granted 8000 dollars as a special appropriation to fight the disease, six new cases having been recently reported in one day. Tho outbreak is generally believed to be most severe in Southern California, but no definite figures are available, as the officials are anxious to avoid causing undue alarm.
