THE AMERICAN FLEET

DATES OF VISIT.

Mr. James Hislop, Under-Seeretary of Internal Affairs, Captain Sommerville. Chief Naval Staff Officer, and Mr. F. Matthews, of the Internal Affairs Department, called upon the Mayor (Mr. C. B. Norwood) this morning to discuss preliminary arrangements and to outline questions of organisation for the'reception and entertainment of the officers and men of the American fleet.' The full position will be placed before a public meeting very shortly, and in the meantinie as much as possible is being done to draw up concrete proposals for the consideration of'that meeting. It is probable that a sum of something like £5000 will be required to entertain the' visitors—there will be almost 12,000 of them—but citizens will not be asked to find the whole of that sum. A substantial vote will no doubt be made by the City Council, and possibly also by the Harbour Board, though nothing definite has been decided upon in that direction. There is a sum of £160 odd in hand from the last Fleet Entertainment fund.
