SALVATION ARMY TRIBUTE

A striking tribute to the memory of the departed ■ Prime Minister was paid at the services held at the Salvation Army Citadel in Vivian street last evening. The largest crowd, 2'principally consisting of men, which has ever joined in a Salvation Army street march in Wellington followed the band, playing the Dead March in "Saul," from Dixon street to the Citadel. Though the building seats 900 people, it was crowded to the doors. Ensign Goffin delivered the address, in which ■ he mentioned the sympathy the late Mr. Massey had always shown to the Salvation' Army and similar organisations. Mrs. Triplow feelingly sang "Requiem," the epitaph Robert Louis' Stevenson wrote for himself. ' At the close of the service the band played the Dead. March in "Saul," the congregation standing in reverent silence. As a scripture sermon, Mrs. Griffin read the twelfth chapter of Ecclesiastes.

A memorial service was""" held last evening at the rooms of the British and Foreign Sailors' Society, 94, Jervois quay. An address, based on Genesis sch. 5v., was delivered by Mr. Hamilton Nimmo. The speaker referred to the fine record of the late Prime Minister, and said that he had set a fine example of- public service to the Dominion ■ and the Empire. Appropriate hymns were sung. There was a large attendance of sailors from the ships in port.
