SPORTS LEAGUE'S REPLY
TO THE EDITOR. Sir,—May I be permitted to have space to make a- few brief observations regarding the letter.from Captain Macmdoe, appearing in your Friday's issue ? J-t is part of the functions of the Sports -I rotection League to support any movement ior the advancement of recreation tacihlies. and to protect the privileges at present, enjoyed. With this obiect "J view, the league called a meeting of representatives of all sports bodies to ascertain how their interests were concerned m the municipal and Harbour Hoard elections. This meeting set up a committee, which decided to submit questions to candidates. The proposed reclamation at Evans Bay threatened the privileges of those who enjoy bathing on the beaches, and tne committee deemed it necessary to inquire from the candidates if they would oppose any scheme which would •materially interfere with this rMit The nature of the reply received from Captain iUacindoe was so unexpected that, as ne states, inquiries were made as to whether he understood the question. He confirmed his answer, which was received at 4 o'clock on Monday afternoon, considered by a meeting of "the committee at 5 .p.m.; and published in the ioilowwg day's paper. There can have been "no hittino- below the belt." Captain Macindoe was particularly mentioned because he was the only candidate who refused to oppose any material infringement of the present privileges. His answer was pubfished exactly as he gave it, and he confirms tins in his letter to you, together with explanations, which he could easily have embodied iv his written answer. No .misrepresentation whatever has taken place. ■ The committee, after mature consideration, decided that it would not be doing its duty to its supporters, and indeed, to the public generally, if it allowed Captain M.-icindoe to go to the poll without his views on this important question being made known. If hi 3 attitude has iv any way affected the voting, he must bear his share" of tho responsibility.—l am, etc., E, W. SHALLCRASS. I 2nd May.
