HIGH COMMISSIONER'S CABLE.

The Department of Agriculture has received the following cablegram, dated the 4th May, from the High Commissioner for New Zealand, London:— BUTTER. Temporary improvement in market earlier this week and brisk trado up to about 1725. Market quiet, with tendency in favour of buyers again. Official quotations aro :— Now Zealand.—Finest salted. 168s (o 172s per cwt (Is 6d to Is 6^d per lb); imsalted, 172s to 176s por cwt (Is 6Jd to Is 6|Jd por lb); other qualities, 140s to 166 a per ewt (Is 2d to Is sgd per lb). Australian.—Salted. 158s to 162s per cwt (Is 43d to Is sid per lb): other qualities, 140s to 154s per cwt (Is 3d to Is 4^l per lb); unsalted, 160s up to 166s per «wt (Is 5d to Is bid per lb); other qualities, 344s lo 150s per cwt (Is 3Ad to Is 4d per lb). Argentine.—ls4s to 158s per cwt (Is 4^l to Is 4gcl per lb); exceptional, 160s per owt (Is 5d per lb); other qualities, 146s to 152s per cwt (Is 3J,d to Is 4J 4 d por lb). Siberian.—According -to quality; 142s to 150s per cwt (Is 3£d to Is 4d per lb). Danish.—Market quiet at thu advance; 188» por ewt (Is 8d per lb). CHEESE. Market slow and lower prices huvo boon accepted. Stocks of Canadian are nearly exhausted. Official quotations are:— English.—Finest farmers', market firm and stocks small; 135s to I4os per cwt (Is 2^d to Is 3d per lb). New Zealand.—Coloured, 95s to 97s per cwt (lOd to 10id per lb); while, 96s to 97s per cwt (IOJd per lb).. Australian:—Coloured and white, 94s per cwt (lOd per lb); white, 100s per cwt (IOJd per lib). Shipments Now Zealand produce arrived this week per s.s. Waimana mid Port Curtis. Estimated stocks of cheese on the Ist May at London, Liverpool, and Bristol wero: Canadian and American, 4250 boxes: New Zealand and Australian 62.400 crates, against 5050 boxes and 131,----200 crates for same time last year. HEMP AND WOOL. Hemp.—Manila dull, but market closed steady. J grade, April-June shipments, quoted at £47 and value. New Zealand market quiet, with little more inquiries for afloat parcels. Highpoint fair in dock sold at £37 10s. fair £36. Business has been done in fair April-June shipments at .£34 15s. There is a buyer of New Zealand highpoint fair April-June shipments Wool.—Bradford market inactive, and quotations affected by fall in values at Australian sales. Nominal quotations for tops are: 64's warp (merino), 4s 9id per lb; 64 s average (merino), 4s 8d per lb; 56's (super halfbred), 3s 2d per ]l>: 40's nrepared (coarse crossbred), 2s' lid per lb. PEAS AND BEANS. Oats: No. 2 Canadian Western April shipment to Avonmouth sold 28s 4£d per 3361b. May shipment 28s. but only 27s obtainable at London. April shipment Canadian offered freely at 30s 6d to 31s 6d for best white and 26s to 28s for feed. Nominal values New Zealand May shipment 28s 6d per 3201b. Peas: Very little demand for blue. Dutch unchanged. Tasirmnian nominally A grade about £16 to £17 per ton, e.i.f. London. Little more inquiry for New Zealand Partridge. Good quality ex store worth 70s to 74s per 5041b. Inferior 60s to 655. .No. 1 May-June shipments quoted at 60s to 65s c.i.f. Tasmaniau Partridge I nood quality ex store 75s to 83s. A grade ! May-June shipment quoted at 72s c.i.f. Beans: New crop Chinese Horse sold on Continent July-September shipment' £9 12a 6d per ton. I Danish Cocksfoot: No business doing in London. Nominal quotations range from j 74s to 86s per cwt. . . !
