{noil OUR OWN CORSESPCNDCST.) NELSON, 21st April.The Nelson schools, after being closed for nearly three months, reopened ou Monday. The school grounds were early crowded. The attendances at the schools have been very good. At the Boys' Central School and at the Brook and Tasman street side schools the attendance is 38 per cent., and at the Girls' Central School and at the Hampden Street School 89 per cent. Standards V. and VI. showed 99 per cent. A part of five Brightwater residents has letmned after spending eight days in the Rainbow District, where they have been culling deer, and shot 437 beasts. The best total for one day was I 91. Among the heads were three 12- j pointers, five H-pointers, and several 10- ! pointers. Last year the party shot 240 j deer in the same district. At the Magistrate's Court on Monday three sheepowners were convicted and fined for exposing lice-infected sheep lor sale. Ono was fined £2 and costs 7s, the two others 30s and 7s costs each. The Nelson Rugby Union competitions commenced on Saturday in perfect weather. For the Mayoralty there- are three I candidates—Mr. W.'Lock, the present Mayor: Mr. H. Coltraan, 'who has been a member of the City Council for the past four years; and Mr. T. W. Foster. For the City Council there are 16 candidates, seven of whom are members ot the pressnt council. For the Harbour Board <(four to be elected) there are five candidates. All the present members are seeking re-election, the fifth candidate being Capt. M. M. MoncriefF. For the Hospital Board (three members) Messrs. G. M. Rout (chairman), E. :J. Barton, and Mrs. Watson, tho sitting members, were returned -unopposed. While it was well known that there would_ be, many candidates for the City Council, the nominations of Messrs. Coltmaii; and Forster for the. Mayoralty came somewhat as a surprise. ! The Rev. George Budd, superintendent of the Presbyterian Home Missions, arrived in Nelson on Saturday morning, and preached in the Presbyterian Church on Sunday evening. Mr. Victor French, travelling secretary of the Presbyterian Young Men's Bible Class, is also on a visit to Nelson. The report on Nelson cricket grounds prepared by Mr. Brewer, caretaker of the Basin Reserve, Wellington, will bo considered at a joint meeting 'of the Nelson Cricket Association and the Citi,zens' Cricket Committee at a meeting to be. held this week. Poppy Day will be held tlus year in Nelson on Friday. The central portion of the city will ,bo in charge, of a ladies' committee, convened by the Mayoress (Mrs. W. Lock), stalls being established in convenient positions. The schools have arranged for the residential areas. Throughout the district teachers and scholars in tho various schools are co-operating, and will conduct the effort in'the various centres. The Anzac Day Memorial Service ar- , ranged by the Returned Soldiers'' Association will be held at the church steps on Saturday at 10 a.m. The address will be delivered by Chaplain-Colonel the Bishop of Nelson. The placing of wreaths on the War Memorial will take place at the conclusion of the service.
