RACE TRAINS

A correspondent writes as follows in resar.d to the Trentham race trains: "The Railway Department advises that it does not propose to make any reduction to passengers attending the races at Trentham yet awhile. The fares will therefore continue at the present high rate, which, on the face of it, is surely unjustifiable. In short, people who go to races are to be treated by the Department differently to the rest of the community—i.e., they must pay extra. We aro (supposed to be a democracy with, equal rights for all. The ladies have a distinct^ grievance; they must all pay first-class fare or travel in a cattletruck, which is, of course, impossible. A movement is on foot to make a pertinent question to WeUiugton members of Parliament at the ne*ct election as to why the Wellington public should be subjected to this gross injustice. Excursion fares are advertised for races in every civilised country, but the powers-that-be in ouri railway service not only do not reduce the fares below the usual week-end price, but actually put on a shilling. The thing is preposterous."
