In the" absence of the president, Mr. J. R.- Salt presided over the usual meeting of the committee of"the S.P.C.A., which was held on Monday last. The inspector reported that numerous cases of cruelty had been investigated since- the previous meeting. A number of places where fowls were kept had been inspected, and in cases where the accommodation was inadequate steps had been taken to secure better treatment for them. In one case where fowls had been overcrowded, and repeated warnings had been ignored, it had been rfecessary to prosecute the offender, who was fined £2 and costs. Other cases concerned cruelty to horses and dogs, and all had, been dealt with satisfactorily. The organiser reported that subscriptions and donations, amounting to £ii 12s, had been received, and that sum included £5 from Mrs. Jackson, £3 3s from Welling ton Warehousemen's Association, £1 Is each from Mrs. C.
