TO END SAND NUISANCE

OBJECTIONS TO BE CONSIDERED,

The history of the progress of the work of putting an end to the sand drift nuisance at Lyall Bay chiefly consists in the relation of the story of a series of (|days,_ chiefly legal delays, occasioned by objections raised by one party or another, and so it is that the work is not y_et_ undertaken; but at least the negotiations are roally speeding onwards In due time, after finality has been reached as to the legal position, the .engineering work will also be completed, perhaps not this -winter, but some other wintor, at any rate, after which time the residents of the areas most afieeted by the drifting" sand will no longer be faced with the task of digging out their gas meters and front paths after each heavy southerly, or scooping clear the roof gutterrngs and rediscovering the linoleum patterns after any wind, from, north, south, oast, or west. It may even be that some will consider the practicability of excavating and calling their lawns back to greenness, perhaps also their gardens.

The position now is that notices of apportionment of cost of the work have been sent to all those residents or property owners concerned, difficulty being experienced in some cases in locating the right persons, and that objections to those apportionments must be filed within two months of the date of service of notice. The last of these objections should be received by 25th inst.., and it will then be for the Corporation and the Lands Department to appoint assessors who will sit with a Stipendiary Magistrate at a date to be fixed to consider the objections raised. This will finalise the preliminaries, and authority may then be given the Corporation to proceed with the work, the plans for which have been finalised.
