The final report of the Departmental Committee on the use of preservatives in food recommends the prohibition of preservatives in all articles of food and drink offered for sale, whether manufactured here or imported, with a few specified exceptions. These include the use of specified quantities of eulphur dioxide m dried fruit, preserved whole fruit, or1 fruit pulp, alcoholic wines, nonalcoholic wines, and cordials, and sweetened and unsweetened fruit juices, and also the use of benzoic acid as an alternative m non-alcoholic winee, cordials ana fruit juices.
