A strange plot was revealed at Dinard, a small seaport town opposite St. Mala, where a man styling himself the Ma«quis Champauvert, but whose real name is Joseph Passal, has been arrested for trying to lure three Parisian jewellers to the Castle Presure, where it is alleged he intended to chloroform them in a, death chamber. . . The police found the basement hung with mattresses, so that the room was air-tight. There were holes in the ceiling thorugh which chloroform fumes could be pumped into the chamber: Tim jewellers were asked to bring a, valuable .collection of jewels and watches as presents for the so-called Marquis, who had, been living a gay life. With Champauvert were his real wife who was formerly a cook, and who acted as maid, and the Marquise.
