MEETING OF BOROUGH COUNCIL.

Tho fortnightly meeting of the Petone Borough Council was held last evening. Present: Mr. J. ■W. M'Ewan (Mayor), and Councillors C. P. Brockelbank, A. G. Steffensen, V. Jacobson, R. H. Jones, H. Jay, W. Hny, G. Cook, and W. P. Coles.

Tho Petone Schools' Library Committeo was granted a subsidy of £30. An amended plan—doing away with a proposed objectionable right-of-way—for a subdivision of a portion of the Wilford Settlement was approved. Tho Lower llutt Borough Council asked tho Petono Borough Council to bear 25 per cent, of the cost of instiilling a fire alarm box at the Hutt Park. It was decided to first obtain an estimate of the total cost from the Lower Hutt Borough Council.

Tho Mayor was appointed Iho council's representative at tho Municipal Conference. The Wellington Harbour Board advised that it had now been decided to charge a royalty of Is 3d per yard on metal removed from the Petone beach, the council to receive 6d of this amount. The Lower Hutt Progress League drew attention lo tho necessity of making it compulsory that slow-moving vehicles carry a roar red light. The league is to bo informed that the council already has a bylaw on tho question. The owner of .premises situated in Ryan street, about which a cleansing order had been issued by the council,°was given an extension of six weeks to carry out the work owing to tho difficulty of getting the tenant out of the house. The Wellington Cricketl Association advised that tho council's communication regarding the use of the Recreation Ground would be placed before the incoming committee, although the council's offer was not likely to bo accepted, as it had been declined by the previous committee. It was resolved to ask tho Potone Cricket Club to confer with tho Reserves Committee on the question of the use of tho grounds for the coming season. A showman was refused permission to hold a carnival in aid of the Petone Central Band. ' < The Hutt Valley Schools' Association was granted the use of a cricket pitch each Friday on condition that the association keep same in order. The inspector was given permission to attend tho Sanitation Conference. The following motion, of which notico had been given by Councillor Hay was passed, Councillors Cook and Jones voting a^-Unst it: "That all existing resolutions upon the minute book relative to tho use (by the borough workmen) of bitumen or union asphalt upon the streets and footpaths be rescinded, and the whole matter reopened for consideration.
