RECORD OF PAST YEAR'S WORK.
Tho committee of the Society for the Protection of Women and Children, in their annual report, state that during tho past year the secretary made 353 visits, as against 267 last year and 753 as against 439 were received at the office. 285 letters wero received, against 315 last year, and 531 written as against 438. Tho new cases for the past year" numbered 188, an increase of 73, and many old cases received further advice and help. The hon. solicitors wero consulted in 33 cases, as against 96 last year. Court proceedings were necessary in 19 cases, as against 26 last year, 17 of which wore successful.
Tho cases dealt with during the year are classified as follow, the number of children concerned being given within parentheses in each instance:—Advico, 41 (60); advice and help, 31 (54); separation and maintenance, 28 (87); maintenance, 12 (13); reconciliation", 3 (3); alleged neglect, 1 (54); alleged cruelty, 17 (55); maintenance illegitimatg children 3 (4); adoption, 3 (3); undesirable homes, 5 (5); homes found, 9 (26); mental, 2 (2); homes offered, 2 (2); custody of children 4 (7); desertion, 2 (4); abduction, 1 (1); alleged attempted seduction, 2 (2); situations found, 2; uncontrollable 2 (2). . . ■
