PETONE-HUTT GAS BOARD

The monthly meeting of the Petone and Lower Hutt Gas Lighting Board was held last. evening. Present: Mr. W. T.Strand (chairman) and Messrs. J. P.iper, W. Hay, W. Meldrumj A. J. Hobbe, and A. Anderson.

The Petone Borough Council suggested that where possible the board should lay its mains, in private property in preference to opening up streets, • especially those with asphalt surfaces. The council also offered to repair damage done to streets by the board's workmen at cost price, plus 10 per cent. The offer was accepted.

Tho Petone Plunket Society mada request for free gas for its room. Mr Piper moved and Mr. Hay seconded that the - request ba granted. Other members were of opinion that the grant would establish a bad precedent, and the motion was lost, only the mover and seconder voting for it.

The gasworks manager, Mr. H. Appleyard that 553 tons 10 cwt of coal had been carbonised, making 6,797,600 cubic feet of gas, being an increase of 344,000 cubic feet over August. 1923; 189 tons of coke and 1849 gallons of tar had been sold. There were in hand 12 tons of coke and 7460 gallons of tar. Twenty-one new services were laid and' 27 cookers sold during August. During the last five months 110 cookers had been installed. It was expected that by the end of September the main-laying to Belmont would ba completed. Tho cookery demonstrations had been well attended.
