WELLINGTON UNION

PONEKE'S APPEAL DISMISSED,

The Wellington Rugby Union's Management Committee met last evening, Mr. J. Prondeville being in the chair. Others present were: Father Kane, and Messrs. J. N. Millard, S. G. Hale, G. 1". W. Jackson, A. Jackson, W. Hardham, E. H. Ward, E, Perry, and A. E. Neilson (secretary).

Advice was received from the New Zealand Rugby Union that the Appeal Committee had dismissed tho appeal made by the Poneke Club in connection with the Poneke-Marist senior game. Poneke had appealed for a replay of the match on the grounds that two equal spells were not played, that the referee being sole judge of time had not kept the time, and that the game had finished before the full time was up. The King Country Union notified that its team to meet Wellington would arrive on the 18th September. Accompanying the team would be Messrs. Dingle and G. R. Norman (managers) and A. Carlson (president of the King Coun-t.-y Union). ' Ad vice, that no further games would bo permitted at the" Hutt Recreation Ground on account of preparations for tho summer season was received from the Hutt Borough Council. _A request that the suspension imposed upon a member of its senior team bo reconsidered was received from the Poneke Club, which considered that the sentence was more severe . than that which had been given in other cases of a similar nature. One case was mentioned in which-an older senior player had been suspended for only two playing Saturdays. It was decided to reply that the sentence must stand, and-that tho club be notified that the particular case which it mentioned was not similar to that of their ■ player. A third-grade player, it was also stated, had received the same sentence as the Poneko senior player. ■ " .

The Wellington Rugby Referees' Association made application for a donation of £40 towards expenses. It was pointed out by the association's secretary (Mr. C. Mullany) that much expense, was incurred by referees in fulfilling engagements every Saturday, as there was .a good deal of travelling. Tho association had a membership of 98, and on each Saturday 76 members were engaged Ire controlling matches. Mr. Prendeville referred to the good work which was being carried ' out by tho referees, and this was of very material assistance to the union, which was desirous of helping the referees. He also mentioned that the" union was short of funds. It was unanimously decided to' accede to tha request of the Referees' Association* . - , .'-...■ •
