TRAFFIC CONTROL

\SPECIAL PQLICE SUPERVISION

PATROLMAN •ON HUTT ROAD.

It is now some time since negotiations were entered into between the Corporation and the Police Department as-to the detailing o"f additional police officers for the supervision of traffic in, city streets, and also for the control of traffic upon the Hutt road,' 'but the agreement between Corporation' and Department is now complete.' and the ' new order o£, things will commence on Ist September. A motor-cyclist constable will patrol the Hutt road, with'an assistant on race and other busy days, and an experienced traffic constable will have as his • special duty ■ the long p and possibly rather disheartening task "of instilling into citizens an understanding of tlie common-sense manner of, iising roads and footpaths in these days of twentieth century traffic. /

Any old.usage was safe enough before cars ,and crowds came-into \being, but something different is required to-day. The traffic constable will'have what will at any rate appear to be a roving commission, with one ; eye upon the driver, the other upon the pedestrian, for when accidents happen the dri\'ei* is not always to blame. ■ ■ , .

Having made .this "step forward .to something better in the way of traffic control, the Corporation may in;some future year take. yet another step-and so bring street usage nyWellirigton into something like "line with' that of other twentieth century and. busy .cities. .

A fourth- point-duty constable is to take up his duties on" the first of the month, at the busy :" and . dangerous Courtenay place intersection.' For many months the Police Department has shown by stationing a 'constable at this point when one -could ■ spared that traffic at this intersection 'called for supervision, but 'it is only recently that the corporation has agreed 'to a ;,concrete scl(£me of finance to, ensure that-.; the pointsman should-be-on; duty at Courtenay place "each" day, and: every 'day.
