' PROVISION FOR GREATER SAFETY.
•: .Whether or not'the plans .-drawn up : for, the; construction - of a:. linking-up length of road to .provide ;for.one-way traffic through-the Xarori; cemetery will come to. anything this^ year depends on ■whether -or' not; the Finance Committee .of the City. Council; can,,, figuratively speaking, waVe a.wand;and call "up the necessary mbney 'forithV.work;. no provision haying been made' for-■■it'in this J year's; estimates.' If keeping: at :it will ! sop the'road sent -.through,.■however,-' it j will Be constructed,, for the Ceae'i# ies Committee 'of: the council is ce?Uinly'! sticking to its plan.' ! /At the last meet- : ing-of the 'council ,the. plan;: was .adversely reported upon by one committee, but straightway the Cemeteries Committee rose and . protested ; and .'.'' had " - the -question ■■ referred .on ' to',: the ■ ■ Finance Coriimittee to find tlie money, it any ;money_ is to/be found." Whether or not the Finance Committee has-been successful will, prosumab'ly, be reported to the.council at its next'meeting. ' • . ■-.In .the meantime the.Cemeteries":Com;,mittee',has 'been making certain .other -minor, provisions; for.,,the. greater, safety of those who visit theLcemetery. A:foot-' ■.path has''been constructed; along 'the' main driye for. a considerable: dfctance. but unfortunately it 'has not' been possible to carry this,.; footway the full length of the,.', drive. on'■ one ■ side of tlfu roadway; ..pedestrians may walk so far on a; footpath on the left of the carriage way, but must, then cross.the-: traffic lines; to reach .; the continuation of the footway on ..the right of the. carriage"1 way, an-arrangement..Which is unavoidable by 'reason; of ,the:, position' of'a-largo burial vault, and an arrangement which, is not as satisfactory :as it might be. . -Tho. bylaw speed limit '■■. through the cemetery is four miles v : nn 'hour, .with, which bylaw, the committee "and v probably most'motorists do'not agree. : If was accordingly proposed by the committee "that the. minimum speed should bo increased to.eight miles per hour.-.as a, ■ perfectly safe and more reasonable speed. 'With this proposal the.-council as a whole did not agree. ,-. The committee, while believing Jfour'miles :-an hour too low a speed—probably' not one driver out of ~-fifty." attempts to observe the-, bylaw' when Waving 'the cemetery— nevertheless looks: upon tho. speeds' as actually, set by;,soma drivers as alto gethor lop free and easy, and is therefore proposing that': Corporation-, traffic inspectors should at times visit the cemetery to see that drivers' ''handle their cajs with due consideration of others..
