TEACHERS' SALARIES
DIFFICULTIES IN THE COUNTRY.
(BI TELEGRAPH.—PEESS ASSOCIATION.)
NAPIER.. 20th June.
Referring to-day to the' shortage of qualified teachers'for schools out of the main centres, the secretary of the Hawkes Bay Education Board (Mr. W. L. Dunn) stated: "I believe that in some of the training college centres there are ex-students without position, as they will not accept positicus away fiom 'town. It does not seen unreasonable^ in;.yiew of the large amount spent by the . Department on the training of-students, to require, as, a condition- of. their training at the college,' bonds' that they should take up a few years' work in country positions. The new teachers' salaries scale is, however, responsible .for the lowering of salaries for certain assistantships in country schools, so that the same inducements are not held out to young, teachers to accept -■ country assistantships.
"When the new scheme was submitted for consideration to the Hawkes., Bay Education Board it.was pointed riufTlhat Ihis difficulty -would probably arise by the lowering of the value of positions, and experience fully proved that tho board's view was correct. A conference between representatives1 of the Department, the New Zealand Educational Institute, and secretaries of the Education Boards is to be held-early iriext. montU to consider the whole question of.teachers' salaries, and I intend to stress strongly the need for some increase in the salaries of country assistantships."
