ASHBURTON, 20En June. The Ashburton Racing Chib's Winter Steeplechase Meeting opened to-day. Rain commenced after the fourth race. The attendance was fair, and the track holding. Totalisator investments were £10,071, as against £13,541 10s for the first day last year, when eight races were held. Results .—

First Hurdles, of 200 soys; one mile and a half.—Likelihood, 10.6, 1; Le Forte, 10.5, 2; Bellrock, 10.1, 3. Also started: 'Frisco Mail, Royal Star, Red Cross, Golden Prince, Fort Regal, Pomposo, Flying Master. Won by a neck, six lengths between second and third. Time, 2min 47 2-ssec. Royal Star, the favourite, fell. . .

Novice Plate, of 125 soys; six furlongs; special weights.—Adopted, 1; Bonatic, 2 ; Thomdale, 3. Also started : Courcelette, North Sea, Markie, Squink, Clarion, Sunny Mac, Olympia, Cochy, JBondhu. Won by half a length, three lengths between second and third. Time, lmin 18 3-ssec.

Hack Steeplechase, of 175 soys; two miles.—Galway, 11.2, 1; Ruddy Gold, 9.10, 2; Tainui 11., 9.13, 3. Also started: Paul Pry, Tokomairiro, Aurore, Sherlock, Malincourt, Woodrow, Taralaga, Blue Streak. Won by three lengths, s.even lengths between second and third. Time, 4min 17 2-ssec. Woodrow and Taralaga fell. Only five horses finished.

Selma Trot, of 156 soys; one mile and a half. —-Rebel, scr, 1; Logic, scr, 2; Frank Dillon, scr, 3. Also started: Succession, Juan Dillon, Bridget Lynn, Direct Tod, Generator, Sea Pearl, Talent, Colonel Mac, Oleda, Rex Minto, Lady Minto, Logandale, Winsome Melody, Lady Peterson, King Sandy, Axtel, Royal Arcade. Won by four lengths, eight between second and third. Time, 3min 40sec.

Won by three lengths, two lengths between second and third. Time, lmin 43 2-ssec. Longbeach Hack, of 130 soys; one mile and.a.quarter.—Sartist, 9.6, 1; Kukume, 10.9, 2; Carpenter, 10.8, 3. Thorndon Handicap, of 150 soys; five furlongs.—Wharfedale, 9.13, 1; Dancing Days, 10.13, 2; Solferite, 9.13, 3. Also started: The Reaver, Weldone, Kikini, Finora, Prosperity, Gossard, Kuia, Knocklyn, Integrity, Miss Minerva, Bella Lake. Bodyguard, Ferino. Won by a length, two between second and third. Time, lniin 3 2-ssec.
