THE TURF

NOTES AND COMMENTS

(BY "SIR LANCELOT."}

There are three jumping races on the first day at Trentham, and four on the second day. The Winter Hurdles, on the opening day, is worth 1250 soys, and the Final Hurdle Handicap, on the concluding day, 700 soys. The principal flat events are the Parliamentary Handicap, of 650 soys. and the Winter Oats Handicap, of 500 soys. For sprinters there are (.lie Stewards' Handicap, of 400 soys, and the Liverpool Handicap, of 3EO soys, both- over six furlongs. There are also a hack hurdle race and steeplechase and flat race each day. It is altogether an attractive programme, and should meet with a good response from owners. Monday next is nomination day for all handicap events. The dates applied for by the. Wanganui Jockey Club for its meetings next, season all fall on Saturdays and Mondays. A new sire in the Wanganui district next season will be the. English-bred four-year-old Tollbridge, by l'ommera (Derby winner of 1915") from Nevskv, by ■Jicero (Derby winner of 1905). Apparently the Australian trotting trainer, P. 'Kiddle, contemplates taking part also in the galloping sport in New Zealand, as he has a yearling colt by Linacre from Sweet Halt nominated for a number of classic events. The Pahiatua Racing Club has got back to its old place on the calendar— the Week after Foxton and tho Wellington_ Summer .Meeting—for next season. 'I he Sydney "Referee" mentions that the time put up by Chrysostom in the A-'S.C. Steeplechase, distance about three miles, although a record for Randwick, does not equal tjie Australasian record for the distance put up ■by Morning. . Chrysostom's time was 6miii 24iscc. Uhrysostom carried 11.9 when be put up the time at Randwick. In Iho lincoln Steeplechase at Riecarton Morning carried 12.3, and ran the distance, about three miles, in 6min. It was v great performance from a- weightcarrying point of view, but not so good as the time put up by Omahu the first lime he won the Lincoln Steeplechase. Ho was credited with running the distance in Smin 54 4-sscc. Wellington-trained yearlings entered for Canterbury and Dunedin two-year-old races next season include Mr. H*. W. Brown's geldings, by Arrowsinitli, from Going Up and Lady .Vladimir, Mr. W. H. Ballingcr\s Doe, by Royal Stag— Arihia, and Rose Blossom, by' Royal fcta" —Rose Pink, Mr. K. L. ' Riddiford's Black Cat, by Absurd—Mascot, Mr. V. Riddiford's Indian Sage, by Catmint— Chakwana, and Mr. j. Fuller's Kilbroncy—Snowstell filly. There is some clashing in the dates of the meetings applied for for next season, f.cvin and Ashlntrst clubs are both applying for 19lh November. This season Levin raced on 23rd . October, and Ashhurst.on 21st November. Gisborne and Poverty Bay have both applied for 12th and 14th February. This season Gisborno raced on ,7th and 9th February, and Poverty Bay on 14th and 16 th February. Nelson and Marlborou','h have applied for 26th and 28th 'February. This year Nelson raced on 28th February and Ist March,and Marlborou^h on 6th and- 3th March. Rangitikei lfas applied for 25th and 26th March, and T\ellinst6if for 26th and 28th" "March. This season Ranstitikei raced on 21st and ! 22nd March, and Wellington on 27th and 29th .-March. Although Mr. G. D. Greenwood has I three representatives in the Welcome Stakes, to be run at Riccarton in November, they do not include Nincom- : poop (Absurd—Cheloma) or Clrisrnon I (Absurd—Lady D.), the two youngsters I who are booked for the Australian'trip. -Mr. C. G. Daltrety lias sold the three-year-old gelding-Goosestep. by Nassau —Warstep, to a West Coast owner, and |he has 'gone into T. Donnellan's stable. ' I The Auckland Racin-.r Club has ailonn- ; list of amendments and additions to the I Rules of Racing- for. the coming confer- | ence. One that will no doubt receive the support of many delegates is inthedij rectum of making one accident fee sufficient for one horse for one, season. At present the fee has to be paid every time a horse changes hands, "and on more'than one occasion in the past has caused financial loss to an owner who was unaware of the rule, and omitted to Bay the fee. . . ■This season the Carterton* Meeting was held in the spring, after Wellington and before Christchurch. Next.season the-, date, selected is after Masterton and before .Wellincton. '• * __ Besides Gloaming and Parody, :Mit G D. Greenwood's team for Sydney by the Uhmaroa on the 27th inst, will' probably consist of Nincompoop (Absurd— Chetomoa). and Chigou " (Absurd—Lady
