RAISING SUBSCRIPTIONS
COLONEL MITCHELL'S STATEMENT.
,: When this matter was referred to him, Crlonel Mitchell, hon. secretary of the Radium Fund, stated that the appeal was, made on the assumption that the board ..would get a subsidy of at least £ for £ from the Government.
■."This- was made quite plain," he ■said, "in'our advertisements' and: appeal,'and the committee had n 0 doubt whatever. ■ that the subsidy would be forthcoming if our appeal succeeded;" It was. not) right, he continued, to allow; the appeal to go on under this assumption if there were legal .difficulties, or if the Government had no intention of granting • the subsidy. , 'It really amounted to obtaining the money fjom people under false pretences. ; ..' "In,, spite of the legal position'that is pointed out,". he added, ," the Government can grant the subsidy we are' asking,- and I have no doubt that when the matter is fully. considered they will grant this very just. request for a noble cause, and . thereby honour- the 'pledge we have' given in good faith to our; subscribers." . ■■■' , ' ■
