WORK OF COUNCIL OF EDUCATION
A proposal that the Council of Education should cease to function received very limited support' at a meeting of the council yesterday afternoon, and members generally expressed the opinion that the body was .doing a very useful service in the interests of education Wellington moved that the Minister of Education should bo advised to introduce legislation to alter, the constitution of the Council of Education so that equal representation might be granted io the primary, secondary ' technical and university branches of the service, with limited executive powers. I n moving the motion Mr. Howell said that questions came before, the council which mutually affected all branches of education, and for that reason all branches of the service should be represented Mr. F. H. Bakewell seconded the motion.
The chairman (Mr. J. Caughley) said that the present representation was based on the number of teachers in the various branches. It might be that representation could be made more equal although he was not sure that it should be absolutely equal. It might possibly be arranged to'have two representatives of secondary 'schools and technical schools; •
A motion was finally.carried that tech"i■ i j Echools and secondary schools should- have separate representation on t»e council.
Mr. Howell then moved that the Minister of Education should be advised to introduce legislation to abolish the council of education. Mr. Howell said he did not wish to cast any reflection on the work of the. council, but it was a different matter to Bay that the council had completely filled the bill: ,M,ss N. E. Coad seeonded'the motion, which was lost after a brief discussion!
