The collision of the mail steamers Kong Harald and Haakon Jarl was accompanied by heart-rending scenes. Both steamers were full of passengers, who were mostly asleep. The Kong Harald's passengers rushed on deck, but quietened down when they found that the bows of the steamer were only dented. The Haakon Jarl was doomed. The first boat lowered was capsized, throwijis the passengers into the water. Others jumped overboard, but most of them were lowered successfully. The captain leapt from the bridge, just before the steamer sank, and was saved. All happened in a matter of a few minutes. *
