OLYMPIC CLUB. The Olympic Club held the Byrne Memorial Race at Seatoun last Saturday for the Byrne Memorial Cup. This cup was donated in memory of Vince, Charley, and "Darkle" Byrne by their mates at the front, and was presented to the club for annual competition. All three were, members of the club, and wellknown in amateur circles. "Darkie" was captain of the club, and old members who are competent to judge say he was the bent skipper in a teams race that Wellington has seen. They were among tho first to join up and saw hard fighting before they made the supreme sacrifice. The course for the race was a five-mile one^ and started from the Seatoun terminus, round the seafront to Worser Bay, over the Worser Bay Hill to Mivamar, across tho old polo ground to tho church, round the bottom of the church past the gasometer to the golf links, skirting the golf links to Scots' College, down to the car line, and then followed the car line back to the, starting point. The race was marred of much of its interest throurfr the handicapper underestimating the capabilities of the winner. Goins round to Worser Bay the strong southerly helped the'han-. dicap men alon?, and so made the task of the scratch man all the harder. The winner turned up in R. Osborne, with smin start, who caught the limit men about half-way, and was never headed. A. Workman, Smin 30s6c start, worked |up to socond place about a mile from | homo, but G. Burton, with 6min start, was not done with, and from here to. the finish the second place was in doubt, but Workman was slightly the fitter, and. managed to win by two yards after a sterlin • finish. The times of the three placed men were 41min SB?ec, 42min SOsec, and 42min 37sec. The fastest time was put up by J. Perston, 35min 4osor. with P. Wilson second fastest

time, SSmin 45sec. After the rim the runners and their friends were tin guests of the Club Committee at afternoon tea. After congratulating the winners Mr. Beaglihole, a vice-president of the. club, asked Mr. R. Perston, who was one of the subscribers to the cup, ti present- it to the winner, Mr. Osbome who briefly responded. In the coursa o. a-few remarks the club captain expressed regret at seeing so few ladies present. It is_ to be hoped that in future runneit will bring their friends along, and so help to make the runs more enjoyable from a social point uf View. The run next Saturday will be from the Council Chambers, Karori.
