THE TUNNEL

TO THE EDITOR. Sir, —A large number of the residents in and about Ellice street agree with the Hataitai Association that the tunnel through Rixon grove would bo of far more benefit to the numerous residents of Hataitai, and it is to be hoped tnat the Engineer will ascertain what the difference in grade will be, since the authorities are thinking of takin" oft from the foot of Ellico street and driving the tunnel through from that part. If Rixon grove were about the same grade-,as Ellice street, and the tunnel went through there, it would obviate the running of trams through the congested street area, and avoid the cutting up of a good street, and leave one of the. few in a good residential part of tho city intact. Some twenty years or more ago the council then in power commenced cutting down at the top of Ellice street tor road metal (where the now much-talked-of tunnel is to be), and continued this for some years, using the spoil, which appeared to be good metal .or repairing the streets. It was an utter failure, and they discontinued using -it, for it soon crumbled, and when ram set in the street was a sea of mud 1 notice that it is proposed to store the metal from the rock, which is to be out through in the space that was scooped out of tho hillside, by the quarrying work done in past years, and which destroyed a beautiful belt of trees, planted by my old friend the late lUr Logan, and ruining one of the most dehgthful walks in Wellington. I refer to the road above the quarry, leading to Mount Victoria, which was cut into to obtain the best of the metal and then had to be fenced in a haphazard manner some distance back to avoid more accidents to people walking round, entirely ruining the road and destroying a picturesque view from that point and leaving the hill in an un-I sightly state, and Ellice street a disgrace to the city. The hill or (parry could now soon be covered with shrubs «nd Ellice street is all that could be desired So I join with the many that Lihce street may still remain as it is, and I trust that the. City Council will "utel-llnf/eo^" 16^0 "^6! 14th June. ' ' H- SAMES-
