MEETING OF BOROUGH

COUNCIL

The fortnightly meeting of the Lower Hutt Borough Council was held" last evening. ■'Present:-Mr.- \y. T. Strand (Mayor), Councillors A. M'Bain. W. Meldrum, D. A. Ewen, J. Mitchell. E.- W. Hunt, and A. J. Hobßs. . . '.ZZ

The Education Board announced its pleasure at the fact that the council'was makingja grant of £50 for the Hutt Technical classes. ,

The Wellington Hospital Board stated that it would give consideration to the question of a local hospital, and the purchase of a special- ambulance for infectious cases. '

The Hutt Valley Electric Power Board forwarded an agreement for street lighting, wljich provided for 249 100 c.p. ™PS at £3 10s per annum each,-'and 1& c.p. lamps at £5 per annum each, lne agreement was adopted. -..:-".'- _The_Petone and Hutt Gas-Lighting Board asked if the council could supply a further quantity of 3-inch pipes^ making3so chains in all. Mr. C. B. Buxton was granted permission to regrade the Town Hall verandah with waterproof cement. Mrs. M. Gpsse offered to sell a, strip of land in Heke.street for widening;purposes, for the sum of £60, if the-coun-cii would erect a high fence along the boundary. Councillor Hobbs considered the price too high, and moved that the Town Clerk-enter into personal negotiations with Mrs. Gosse and also' the adjoining: owner. ' .:.■.'. ■...,-■

Mrs.E. M'Corinell made further complaints regarding the overgrown state of Wilford street, and also of wandering stock. It was decided, to proceed at once with the work of clearing the street, the.work to be done by returned 'soldiers, if any are available:. The complaint concerning wandering; stock 1-was referred to the ranger. ' ' ' ' Mr. C. H. Treadwellxomplained of the fact that trucks of manure were allowed to stand on the line at the railway station, and cause a nuisance. The matter was referred to' the Health Department. . .

On the motion of ■ the Mayor, it was decided to accept the' tender of Mr. .0. T. Baigent for the erection of a concrete fence along the Laing's road bun,dary of the Methodist property lor the sum of £49 15s, provided the plans, etc., had been approved by the Methodist trustees. '

The question of improving the footpath in .front of the new'shops in the main- street was held in abeyance until the occupiers of the shop—Messrs. Goodwin and .Chichester and Mr. Belcher— came to an agreement as to the payment of two-thirds of the cost. -■

It was resolved that hemlock be declared a noxious weed within .the borough.

Councillor Mitchell was authorised to purchase 100 shrubs to replace those which had not grown in the different reserves. . : ...

The Western Hutt Advancement Society is to be asked to take over the garden plots at Donnelly's corner and Cuba street corner.

The engineer, Mr. E. J. Barnes, reported that the 'whole of the bus routes and thirteen other streets had been patched. As soon as broken shingle was available better results would be obtained. The cost of the shiugle placed on the roads during May, including" royalty and other charges, was 7s 7d per cubic yard delivered. The wet weather had interfered with the work on the footpaths. The repairing of the" iron work on'Mellirig Bridge was m hand. ■■ The appreciation of the council -was expressed to Councillor E. AY! Hunt-, for his valuable gift of books to.the library. The Mayor said it was gratifying to note the increased number of subscribers- to the library. - '
