PHILOSOPHICAL SOCIETY

CHEMICAL SECTION.

The chemical section of the Philosophical Society met last evening. Mr. H. Rands presided over a good meeting. A very interesting lecture entitled "The Chemistry of Starch," was delivered by Professor Robertson, who dealt in' detail with the various types of staTcli obtained from different plants. He reforred especially to potato starch, used very extensively for the manufacture' oE alcohol, and to the extraction ot rice starch for laundry purposes. The professor then discussed the chemical properties of starch in the light of recent research work, the credit for which lies largely with English chemists. A paper read by Mr. Richardson summarised the results of recent work at the college on the absorption of organic acids by animal charcoal. Absorptive processes, as mentioned subsequently by the chairman, are rapidly becoming of great importance in' industry : .(heorv lags behind, practice: such theoretical in-vestigations.-therefore, are of very real value.

Both'lecturers were accorded a hearty vote of thank*. . . J
