NELSON NEWS

MURCHISON RAILWAY LEAGUE

(PEOM oub own correspondent:)

NELSON, 9th June.

Mr. H. Atmore, M.P., has received the following letter from Mr. John Bradbury, secretary of the Murchison Railway League: "At a large and enthusiastic meeting under the auspices of the league, the following resolution was unanimously passed : 'That the' Government be urged through Messrs. Jlud3on and Atmore, M.P.'s, to place £100.----000 on the next appropriation for the^ Glenhope-MuKhison railway, and that adequate preparation be made^to ensure the expenditure o.f the whole apiount daring the financial year. We hope this will meet with your hearty support. Thanking you for your assistance in the past." . . •...'• • '

The City- Engineer reported at" the last meeting of the City : Council : "That the time has arrived when the council should consider the question of a show room and a gas salesman to look after it." Councillor Edwards said the matter had been before the council for years. ' There was., absolutely no- provision made for demonstrating the articles, or anyone to give information. His own experience when purchasing some articles had made him disgusted with the whole business. Councillor Nightingale thought the council should make arrangements at once for a showroom and a"1 salesman. Councillor Gibbs suggested that the question of a gas engineer should also be considered. Tlie council decided to refer the whole matter to the committee.

From time to time the City Council hag been put to great expenditure owing to, the' blocking by the Bridge street sewer, and the engineer, in order to save cutting up the street whenever a blockage occurs, is now putting in. an additional . manhole. The engineer states that he finds one of the principal causes of the silting up of: the old server in Waimea street is the drainage from motor garages. Vast quantities of sand, silt, and oil enter the drains, and it will be necessary for the proprietors of the .garages, to provide proper silt traps or disconnect their drains.

The city's electrical department, continues to progress at a,' satisfactory rate. The consumers' applications now number 809. Applications for motor load show a marked increase. - Councillor Nightingale expressed gratification at the rate at which householders were connecting up with* the. scheme, and thought.it might not be long before the council would have to consider extending the plant. The Mayor said that everything was working satisfactorily, but it would be a considerable time before the plant would need extending. A Christehurch visitor had informed him that the Nelson works were among the best he had seen. The premises of the City Club, in Church street; were entered early on Saturday morning. Three :,cases of ■whisky, several bottles ( of ' schnapps, brandy, and wine, and, a. quantity of cigars and cigarettes were stolen. Some new parts for the main engine at Tarakohe cement workß have been made entirely of Onakaka iron. The manufacturers, Messrs/Niven and Co.. Wellington, express themselves as very pleased with the quality of the iron, while Mr. Marshall, of the cement company, states that the completed job, is an excellent one. ,

Aphelinues Mali, the parasite of the wooly aphis, one of the worst orchard pests; is .doing excellent ;work .in the Auckland province, according to'" a statement made by Mr. G. A. Green, secretary of the New Zealand- Nurserymen's 'Association. The parasite was introduced by the Cawthron Institute about a couple of years ago. It has already wiped out woolly aphis in many Nelson orchards, and similar good resultt- are apparently being secured in other parts of the Dominion. ■ : In Saturday's football matches the grounds were heavy. Rain fell all night and throughout the morning,- but the weather cleared in the afternoon. In ths senior game Nelson Club defeated Waimea by 18 points to 3. Junior results : Wakatu beat Nelson, College beat Old Boys, Waimea beat Rewai. Third-class : Waimea beat College B, Wakatu beat Colbge A, Old Boys-beat Nelson. . . ..

A.t the annual meeting ,of the Nelson Licensing Committee 'the application by L. T. Davies for a renewal of the license for the Centra! Hotel was adjourned. Recently a separation order was granted: against the licensee, and this fact was mentioned to the committee by the police. At the adjourned hearing Mr. Hayes,:, for the applicant, said his client had made an offer to his wife for .her to take over the. license for a certain sum. _ The sum asked," however, was considered too much by the other side, and there the matter rested at-present. He suggested a further adjournment. Sergeant Barrett said the. matter was one of urgency," and should be settled as soon as possible. Already complaints were arising out of the present state flf affairs. On behalf of the owner of the hotel, Mr. Kemnitz asked for a further adjournment, arid intimated that unless the parties concerned came to some agreement the owner .would exercise his powers under the terms of the lease. The committee agreed to postpone the application for another ;week.r „- ... . , ■
