HUTT ROAD EXTENSION

DEPUTATION TO HIGHWAYS

BOARD

QUESTION OF SUESIDIES.

The committee set up at last week's meeting of local body representatives during their consideration of the City Coun-. cil scheme for the extension of the Hutt road, comprising the Mayor (Mr. R. A. Wright), the Mayor of Petone (Mr. J. W. M'Ewan), the Mayor of Lower NHutt (Mr. W. T. Strand), the chairmen of the Makara and Hutt - County Councils (Messrs. E. Windley and A. I. Mackay), Councillor ."H. D. Bennett, and: the City Engineer (Mr. A. J. Patersqn), this morning waited upon the Highways Board to ascertain what attitude <■ the board would take up in regard to the scheme and the payment of £ for £ subsidies on roads, declared to be main highways,: within the area covered by the. scheme. '. .

A satisfactory answer was received as to that point, stated the Mayor, after the conference, and then arose "the question of .widening and gradine the Johnson-ville-Ponrua road. The Highways Board has already carried out certain surveyingwork on that length, and will also 'pay a £ for £ subsidy fov necessary devia"tions and widening. A further meeting of the Hutt road Board, augmented by representatives of all local bodies concerned, will now be held in order that a definite understanding may be,-come to'-with the Hutt and Makara County Councils as to grading or widening certain' roads, the Hutt Road Board, as at present constituted, being concerned with' arid having power only for paving work. The local bodies wil be asked whether they are agreeable to meet their share of the £ for £ subsidy, as proposed by the Highways Board. If that mutual arrangement can be come to everything should be fairly ship-shape as far as Porirua. The Eastbourne road, added Mr. Wright, was in a different category, since it was not a-main highway, and'as theHutt Road Board could not undertake the necessary widening that was a matter for discussion .with the Hutt County Council. .. :. .-.. ■ J
