SCHOOL FOR TRENTHAM

MEETING OF HOUSEHOLDERS.

A meeting of all interested in the provision of a State school building for Trentiiam was held in the Soldiers' Club, Trent-ham, on Monday night. Mr. P. Robertson, a member of the Upper Hutt School Committee,- presided. Mr. W. H, Field, M.P., and about 60 parents and guardians of children were present. The Rev. W. S. Barnett reported the work done by the Upper Hutt School Committee, since Ist May, 1923, to procure.a, side school for Trentham, for children up' to and including Standard II.; also their efforts to induce the Board of Education to procure not less than three acres of land for future school purposes. He stated that the reviving- of a regulation to. the effect that children under ten years of age travel free on the train, only if they live not less than two miles from the school; and children over ten years of age, only if they live not less than three miles from the school, had caused the committee to convene a meeting-of parents and guardians of the children. Then the question of a site for the future school1 required to be settled as soon as possbile, on account ofMr. E. W. Cottle's generous offer, of a site on the. corner of the Main road and Moonshine road.

Mr. W. H. Field stated that as member for the district,-and as a member of the Board of Education, he had been working for a school for Trentham for some considerable time. The Board of Education had encountered a long anddifficult task in acquiring land and erecting a school at Silverstream, but, happily, that task would soon be completed. The board could now devote more attention to Trentham. He, with other members of the board, had recently inspected several sites at Trentham. One offered by Mr. E. W. Cottle and another' offered by Mr. Kinnard. He had also asked Mr. Barry to offer certain property owned by him. Then the board had written to Mrs. Barton to ask her to offer a site. Mr. Field urged the people of Trentham to make up their minds as. to which site they desired to have, and then to speak with one voice. By doing this they would hasten the building of the school very considerably. The following resolutions were carried : "That the Board of Education be asked to purchase the site offered by Mr. E. W. Cottle, on the corner of Moonshine road^ containing 3£ acres, for a school site." "That this meeting of parents and guardians endorses the action of the Upper Hutt School Committee in asking the Board of Education to arrange to open immediately the building in the Trentham Camp, lately occupied by the headquarters of the Trentham Hospital, for a side school for children up to and including Standard II." "That both the Education Department and the Railway Department be urged to allow children over ten years of age to have free passes on the train as heretofore." ■■
