A SUCCESSFUL CAMPAIGN

SUM OF £10,800 AVAILABLE

APPRECIATION OF SECRETARY'S WORK.

Last evening the Executive Committee set up in connection with the Radium Fund campaign held its final ordinary meeting, the aim, the raising of £10,000 towards the establishing of a Radium In-'i stitute at the Wellington Hospital, having been fully achieved. Mr. F. Castle presided. In his report, the secretary, Mr. G Mitchell, stated : "The committee will be gratified to know that after paying all expenses there will be a sum of approximately £10,800 available to be handed over to the Hospital Board. "Altogether it has been a big effort, and members I am sure -will feel gratified at the result. This result is due to the public bodies and others throughout the appeal district, who took up the campaign on our behalf, also to the splendid help given by the Press and to the untiring work of members of the committee and others who have devoted so much time to the campaign. "Throughout the appeal there have been many individual efforts of outstanding merit. These good people will be able to find consolation in the success of the campaign, and the fact that the cancer sufferers in our district will be given a better chance of life by their effort." The statement of receipts and expenditure showed the following items:— Keceipts: Received by treasurer, £10,----445 "9s sd; in hand, Dannevirke £133 Is sd; Blenheim, £99 8s 9d; Victoria Bowling Club, £36 15s; promised, City Council, £500; Blenheim, £135; total, Expenditure: Accounts paid, £349 Us 8d; accounts owing, £43 9s; salary of I advertising man, £G0; incidental expenses, £20; paid to hospital, £9000; balance, £1876 10s lid; total, £11349 14s 7d. . . In moving tliat the committee should place upon record its warm appreciation of the work done by the secretary, Sir John Luke spoke of the unflagging and' always enthusiastic work done by him from the very commencement of the campaign, which would have as its result the relief of suffering in many cases and the bettermen of humanity's lot. The chairman and Messrs. M'Laren and Wilson also spoke of the consistently zealous work done by Mr. Mitchell, and the motion was carried by hearty acclaIn reply, Mr. Mitchell thanked those who had by their assistance enabled him to carry the work on. The greatest- satisfaction which he and everyone who had taKen a part in the campaign could have was that it had been carried forward to full success, and the amount aimed at had been achieved. . There were many whose names had not teen mentioned and who had at no time come before the committee or public, who had, nevertheless, rendered very valuable service To the members of the committee he expressed his special thanks, but suggested that though, the major aim of the campaigni had been achieved, the committee should hold together until the full subsidy, of £ for £ had been pail by, t. h, e. Personally, he did not think for one moment that the Go--ernment would refuse the full subsidy for it: would not have been just to allow the campaign to go forward on the assumption that the subsidy would' be granted if there was the slightest doubt about it.
