The record for the race is held by Oxford, who; in 1911, won by nearly three lengths, in 18min 29sec. In 1900 Cambridge won the race in 18min 45sec • and ia 1893 Oxford accomplished a similar feat. .. " ■ P. C. Mallam is apparently following in the footsteps of the crews which won the race jn the 'nineties. In those days it was usual for members of the crew to visit the Empire Music Hall on the evening of the race., and it was considered quite the correct .thing for one or more of them to be thrown out for creat. ing a disturbance. George Griffiths, in on B of. Ins novels, refers to the fact that one of his characters had earned undying fame by being thrown out of the Empire fully iifteen minutes earlier than the previous, record for such an event '
