RAIDS IN WASHINGTON
"WETTEST PART OF AMERICA."
WASHINGTON, 3rd April. Acting under President Coolidge's orders, and as part 'of the campaign to clean up ■ the capital, the police conducted a series of spectacular raids, resulting in the arrests of 150 persons illegally possessing, selling, or manufacturing alcoholic beverages,, and confiscating thousands of gallons of liquor. The raid disclosed the fact that Washington is probably the wettest part of America. The raid covered every part of the •city. Detectives during the past fortnight have been making secret investigations, purchasing - liquors at ; various places, and using the evidence thus obtained to secure search warrants. Hotels, storage structures, and private homes wore included. So many prisoners were taken to the police station that the cells were overcrowded, and many were kept in corridors under a guard. A large number of'negroes were included among those apprehended. The authorities declare that the raids will be continued until something approaching obedience of the prohibition law is secured. .
