BOROUGH COUNCIL MEETING

The fortnightly meeting of the'Petone Borough Council was held last evening. Present : Mr. J. W. M'Ewan, C. P. Brockelbank, A. G. Steffensen, R. H. Jones, A. J. Pointon, H. Jay, W. Hay, G. Cook,'and W. P. Coles. 'Messrs. Chapman, Skerrett, Tripp, and Blair, acting for Mr. P. Sharpe, stated that the council was unnecessarily discharging storm water into Mr. Sharpe's property from Udy and Burnham streets, and also had opened a new channel for 'Moran's Creek, and did not fill the old one.' The borough engineer explained that the drainage on to Mr. Sharpe's property was done before Mr. Sharpe purchased it. The trouble could be effectively cured by the placing of sumps at the end of the streets. It was decided to place the sunips in position, and to obtain legal advice on the question of the council's liability in regard to 1 the filling of the drain complained about. ! A plan of a subdivision of a portion of Mr. P. Sharpe's property was recommended by the borough engineer for approval. After some discussion the plan [ was referred back to the owner with a request that the street level be raised^at the' lowest point, by one foot. The Petone and Hutt Gas' Lighting Board a,sked for the co-operation of the j council, in terminating the practice of conducting the. drainage, from the gas works into Moran's Creek, by allowing it to flow into the council's sewers. It was resolved to obtain the opinion of the Public Health Department as to what the effect would be on the septic tanks. The Hutt Valley Electric Power Board was granted permission to remove the gas street lighting standards, provided, at the cost of the Power Boards tho lamps' are fixed to Power Board's poles until such times as the change-over froafl gas street lighting to electric street lighting is made. Recommendations were received from the Electric Power Board's engineers in respect to the machinery required to be purchased to enable the council 'to use the electric power for its pumping, operations. . . The Hockey Association inquired as to the possibility of securing one or more playing areas. The.clerk was instructed to inform the association that no grounds were available on the recreation ground, but there was an area, at the south-eastern, portion of the borough which might be made available. In reply to a letter, from the Mayor, asking that the Railway Department erect houses on. the land in Collins r»'l Jesse streets, under the jurisdiction of the Department, the. General Manager of Railways stated that the Department was not yet prepared to undertake the erection. of houses in the locality, but as soon as the present requirements oi the Department were met the question I would be considered:

The purchase of a tractor was approved. The question of the purchase of a road roller and other plant was deferred pending the report of a consulting engineer. . . '

The Mayor and the engineer were appointed the council's delegates at a con.ference to consider the standardisation of building bylaws.
