ENTHUSIASM IN EGYPT
FIRST PARLIAMENT OPENS
IDEAL OF INDEPENDENCE.
(UNITED PRESS ASSOCIATION.—COPIMGHT.) (REUTERS TELEGRAM.) CAIRO, 15th March.. Egypt's first Parliament opened amid scenes of great enthusiasm, crowds shouting continuously and singling out for special applause the senators and deputies who have been imprisoned or deported, but everybody was cheered, including British journalists, who were greeted'with shouts of "Vivat Sudan," apparently indicating the crowd's desire for a union between Sudan and Egypt. Lord Allenby, whom her ladyship accompanied, was an imposing figure in his field marshal's uniform. King Fund, accompanied by Zagliil Pasha, drove from the palace in a State carriage, and was incessantly cheered. At the opening of the Parliament, after the King had taken the oath Zaglul Pasha read the Speech from the Throne, which stated that the task of Parliament ■was to realise the complete independence of Egypt. •The Government is ready to negotiate ■with Britain for this. The King and Premier received an ovation from the great crowds on returning from the ceremony.
