THE TURF

MASTERTON RACING CLUB

LADY GAY WINS A DOUBLE

NOTES ON THE RUNNING,

The Autumn Meeting of .the Masfcerton Racing Club, held at the Opald course ou Saturday, was not favoured with the best of -weather. It rained in the forenoon, just about the time the people would lie deciding to go, and this no doubt affected the attendance. This was reflected in the investments on the two first events. The conditions somewhat improved, and it remained fine overhead until just before the concluding event, when rain set in. The sum of £12,830 was handled at the machine, against £13,087 for the corresponding meeting last year, which, under the circumstances, must be considered very, satisfactory. During the afternoon the Masterton owner, Mr. W. E. Kemball, started fourteen, horses. He won two events and was in the money on other occasions, but was not not so successful as a year ago, when he was first in five events. Mr. A. P. Wilson was the stipendiary steward in attendance. He held one or two inquiries into minor matters, but nothing of a serious nature occurred in the running to engage the attention of the Judicial Committee. Starter C. O'Connor was in his best form at the barrier, and the meeting was capably managed by Mr. Norman James (secretary), with the assistance of Mr. J, Griffiths, of Wellington. LADY GAY BEST MAIDEN. Elmorz, The Miller, Black Rock, and Helen Wilkie were taken out of the 'Trial Stakes, leaving in eight runners. The Trentham-trained Lady Gay was the choice of backers. Willow Wai spoilt his chance by failing to jump off with the others. 'Kilfair'e began best, and led for half way, where Weeta hit the front. He was stopping at the distance, where Lady Gay joined Kilfaire, • and, drawing away, won with something to spare. Sunny Valley beat Weeta, who showed pace, but does not appear ready. Lady Gay raced recently at Dannevirke, and although sent out favourite failed to get in the money. She was probably improved with the race. Lady Gay is owned by Messrs. P. Hipp and H. L. Kingan, and trained by the last named. KEMBALL'S FIRST AND SECOND. There were only live runners for the Telephone Handicap after Pillage, Good Mark, and Ma Boughal were withdrawn. The Trentham representative, Piquant, came in for more support than the bracket (Kilceit and Bonrina). Hytinns, who was next the rails, jumped out well, but had not gone far before Piquant took up the. running. At the home turn she was showing the way to Bonrina and. Solrino. Kilceit joined in at the distance, and heading Piquant, who wus tiring, managed to finish second to her stable mate. Hytinus could not act in the going, and was last to reach the finishing post. Bonrina and Kilceit were among the winners at the same meeting last March.. The last-named is engaged in..the.Silverstream Handicap ,at, Trenlhani. OPEN SPRINT TO QUEST. Tiie ten acceptors for the Flying Handicap were all produced. Lady Fingers (H. Gray), who drew a position next the rails, was made favourite. She began well, and had every' chance to score, but was evidently not good enough. Chimera and Backsheesh assisted her in making the pace in the first part. About a furlong from home Mountain March put in a claim and was challenged by Quest, and the latter finishing best won liamlily without being ridden out. Lady Fingers just beat Chimera' i'o.- third money. The other runners included Hytinus. who had started in tLio previous race. This was the first success of Quest in the colours of Mr. V. Kiudiiord, who was not present to sec him win. The Martian gelding is in the Thompson and Railway Handicaps at Ti-ciilhnni. and does not incur a penaJty for Saturday's win. MERRY DAY IN FORM. Bonet'tei- was the only defection from the Autumn Handicap. Merry Day (H. Gray), who ran two good races at Dannevirke, was a short-priced favourite. Bitters, on the outside, was slow to move, and was at the tail end of the field going out of the straight. He was' jn front at the back of the course, with half the journey covered, his nearest attendants being.Vagabond, Zero Hour, and Printemps. Bitters still had charge at the home bend, where Printemps and Merry Day were also handy. Half-way down the running Merry Day and Bumptious joined Bitters, and the firstnamed, finishing best, won with something in hand. Scion, who looked well, finished fourth. Little River parted company with his rider leaving the straight, but horse and jockey (A. Stowe) got off without injury. Zero Hour shaped disappointingly, and perhaps it was the going that stopped him. He only carried 6.12, which is a pound less than his original handicap. Merry Day is not in at Trentham, but is in the principal handicap events at Awapuni. JUVENILE HANDICAP TO BONIDEER. There were eleven runnel's for the Juvenile Handicap after Kilmar was taken out. Bonideer (Gray's mount) and Subjection were the popular picks. Tho first-named began smartly, and had her opponents strung out when they had gone a furlong. By the time the straight entrance was readied Bonideer had increased her lead to a good gap. Here Suggestion and Tutankhamen were doing the best of th© others. Bonideer was still in charge at the distance, where Tutankhamen was gradually overhauling the leader, and was only beaten by a neck Star Shell, trained at Trentham, got up in the last few strides to beat Subjection out of third place. Jubilance, J. Lowe's Australian-bred filly, made her first appearance in the race. Bonideer, trained by A. D. Webster at Otaki for her Wellington owners, scored her first win. Supporters of Tutankhamen got just twice the prico backers of the winner received.. A section of the public was under the impression that the judge had wrongly placed the horses, but the judge adhered to his decision. LADY GAY WINS AGAIN. All started for the Masterton Welter Handicap except Kilfaire. Lady Gay, penalised 51b for the previous win was the popular pick. The Miller (Gray's mount) jumped back when the barrier rose, and lost some ground. Wheel and Hyama assisted in the pace-making in the first part. Approaching the home turn Lady Gay'went to the front, and, running-the distance out well, woii nicely from Sir Moment, with Hyama and Otauru Kid next. Gladful, carrying top weight, and Tattoo,. who had raced earlier in th« day, were never prominent. Backers of the first, and second horses received exactly the same dividaud. T. Young, who rode Lady Guy in both starts, won the same double at Opaki a yew ago an Fuketoi and Lady »WjjJm&pau-. **<& &ai « ia. .tUa- Wgb

Weight and Silverstream Huudicaps on the opening clay at Trehlliam, and is liable to carry 101b penalty in whichever she runs. STEWARDS' HANDICAP TO REFRIGERATION. All started for the Stewards' Handicap, except, Probate, who had raced earlier in tiie day. Pencils (H. Gray) was the best backed. He jumped out well, and had every chance had he been good enough, but the weig'it and holding going probably settled his chance. He was well beaten by two light-weight opponents in Refrigeration and Lady Beu. The rider of the last-named claimed 51b allowance, which brought her weight down to 7.7. She was thus in receipt of over two stone from Pencils. Three of the Kemball team started, but fourth place to • Bonotter was the: best any of them could do. At the- start the three bearers of the red band were tailed off. Refrigeration is owned by Mr. W. E. Bidwill, president of the W.-rira-rapa Racing Club, who was present to see her win. Refrigeration is in the Thompson and Railways Handicaps at Trentham, and does not incur any penalty for the win. CONCLUDING EVENT TO BONXITA. Foolish and Sir Moment were scratched for the Dash Handicap, leaving in six runners. There was only one dividend on account of the bracket (Avonlea and Bonlita). Backers stuck to Gray and sent Good Mark out favourite, although that horse looked dry in the coat and as if a let-up would benefit him. A. Reed rode Tawehi, who put up 71b overweight. The Nelson winner, Bonlita, carrying 31b overweight, was always in front. Pillage was chasing him in the first part; and at the finish ho won comfortably from Tawehi, with Good Mark and Pillage next, Results: — Trial Stakes, of 100 soys; five furlongs.—l Lady Gay, 8.5 (T.
