GOLF
THE SEASON OPENED,
The 1924 golf season opened in Wellington on Saturday, when Bamii and Mornington Clubs, opened their links. After the week of practically continuous rain the links were fairly sodden, but at Ranui in particular they were not .a? bad as was anticipated, and a large I number of members and visitors were present. Music and a dancing floor were provided in the clubhouse for those who did not cave to go on the links. Afternoon tea was provided under the control of Miss Batham (president) and Mrs. airschberg (secretary). Mr. W. H. rieid, M.P., declared the season open, and drove the first ball. In declaring the season open he took the opportun- | ity of presenting the club with a handsome silver challenge cup, to be competed for annually, and a replica of the cuj) won during-the past season by Mr. J. D. Dalziel. The announcement was greeted with applause. The club captain (Mr. A. A. Stichburv) welcomed visitors. " ■ At the Mornington Club, the Mayor (Mr. R. A. Wright, M.P.) declared the season open, ar/ drove the first ball. In welcoming the Mayor, Mr. W. A. Grenfel] stressed the need of better accommodation at the municipal links. The Mayor said he realised the difficulties. The matter should be brought before the Reserves Committee, and, as the • estimates were shortly to be considered, he advised them to get to work and place their case. ■ He congratulated the club on its marked progress during the year. . ; AfteiKoon tea was given members and visitors by the Indies under Mrs. Cheyne (captain). WELLINGTON CLUB. In the competition for thp Ward Cup at Heretaunga the results have so far been as follow : — First round : Swarm beat W. F. Ward, 0. Wilson beat K. Duncan, Kirkby beat Bowring, Rhind beat Steele. . Second round: C. Richardson beat Swarm, K. Douglas beat Kirkby, Rhind beat D. M. Findlay, A. D. Morris beat A. Duncan, I. Milne beat Sutton, Hales beat Kiely, Chesney beat Rawson, Callender beat Parker, G. Marchbanks beat J. W. Ward, A. Whitcombe beat Ashford, J. Duncan heat Fussell, Burt beat Kaphael, Raymond beat Reakes, Strong beat Bauchop.
