MR. LAWSON'S RESIGNATION

Members of the Farmers' Union state that Mr. Lawson resigned in too great a hurry, and they were amazed at. the precipitancy of his action. They state that he could at least have waited until next week.

Mr. Lawson will now form a purely Nationalist Government, but will be in a, minority, arid it is expected that the partj r will be defeated on the first at^ tempt to legislate contentiously.

The Victorian Farmers' Union decided that the pact between the Country Party and the Nationalists to maintain a- composite State Government in power be terminated ■with, the life of. the present Parliament. The' farmers are dissatisfied with the, handicap under which the party Euffers owing to being tied to the National Government, which means a consequent sacrifice of its special aims and poNver as a political entity. The conference also passed a resolu-; tion empowering the farmers' Parliamentary party, should necessity arise, to enter into a working arrangement with any political party, but retaining the right to nominate .its own candidates for all districts. ■ -
