BISHOP EXPLAINS CAUSES.

Ihe Bishop of Durham ascribes the shortage of clergy to the following causes: (1) The classes from which many excellent clergy are drawn are tending towards sterility; (2) the movement forwards clerical celibacy; (3) uncertainty regarding the conditions of the ministry and dread ot. clerical poverty; (i) intellectual difficulties. He points out that the- classes which, were accustomed to keep their sons at school until 23 or 24 years of age are being replaced by classes expecting their sons to earn their own living at from 16 to IS.
